PRESENTATION
Window Thermal Performance and Code Compliance: Understanding Window Performance Under the Massachusetts Stretch Code
This session examines the evolving challenges of window selection and fenestration compliance under the current Massachusetts Stretch Energy Code. Presenters will explore how window type, size, frame-to-glass ratio, and assembly configuration influence thermal performance, and why project-specific modeling is increasingly necessary to validate compliance. Drawing from design practice, specification development, and manufacturer coordination, the session will highlight common obstacles, performance tradeoffs, and practical strategies for evaluating compliant window systems in real-world projects. A discussion related to recent testing and field observation of installed windows will be provided to outline lessons learned and repair considerations for windows that have been recently installed.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Explain the factors that most significantly affect window thermal performance, including system type, size, and frame-to-glass ratio.
- Review key fenestration compliance considerations under the current Massachusetts Stretch Energy Code.
- Discuss the role of project-specific thermal modeling and how responsibilities may be assigned among designers, specifiers, manufacturers, and contractors.
- Identify common design challenges and product-selection tradeoffs encountered when pursuing energy code compliance.
- Outline practical tools, resources, and evaluation strategies that support informed selection of compliant window systems.
