FM Global/FM Approvals Presentation
Presenter: Phillip J Smith – Vice President and Manager of the Materials Group of FM Approvals
This presentation will cover roof, roof accessory, plaza and wall system, photovoltaic system, and other building envelope components related to FM Global focus and approvals development. It will also discuss the recently developed beta version of RoofNav® that allows users to test new capabilities. RoofNav is FM Approvals’ complimentary online roof assembly selection and project management tool. RoofNav’s updates reportedly include a rebuilt search engine that allows users to exclude certain roof layers from their searches; the ability to share searches and assemblies with anyone involved in a project; a more intuitive user interface; and the ability to print a Contractor Package that summarizes information for an FM Approved roof assembly with specific project selections and securement details.

MEET THE PRESENTERS
Phillip J Smith, PE
Phillip J. Smith, PE is Vice President and Manager of the Materials Group of FM Approvals. He holds BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University and has over 39 years experience in testing and research of building materials. He is responsible for the overall management of the Materials Group. He is a member of ASCE, NRCA, RCI, ICC and RICOWI.
He began his career at FM Approval in 1984 as an Approvals engineer. In 1989 he transferred to FM Global Staff Engineering working on Data Sheet development and supporting FM Global Loss Prevention Consultants. He moved back to FM Approvals in 1999 as a Senior Engineer. Since then, he has held positions of Technical Team Manager, Principal Engineer and his current role as Manager of the Materials Group.
Michael (Mike) Darsh
Mike Darsch, Vice President of Technical Services at Sika Corporation – Roofing, has more than 10 years of experience in the commercial roofing industry. Prior to commercial roofing, Mike had 10+ years of working in engineering and designing for residential construction. His commercial roofing background encompasses many technical and non-technical disciplines, including product development, training, compliance, codes and standards, and business development. Mike is a dedicated SPRI member, a founding contributor to NRCA’s ProCertification program, and a representative at many roofing industry summit meetings.
Steve Facteau is Director of Technical Sales for Eastern Architectural Reps, manufacturer’s representatives for Elevate Roofing Systems in New England. Elevate is an industry-leading manufacturer of quality roofing products including EPDM, TPO, PVC, Asphalt (APP/ SBS), and Metal roofing systems. In addition to his daily responsibilities, Steve is the lead technical resource for Eastern Architectural Reps. Steve has worked directly with Elevate and FM Global since 1993 and advises contractors on FM Global insured projects.
Steve is a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh and has been in the roofing industry for over 40 years. Steve works alongside contractors, architects, and consultants in New England. Steve provides technical expertise and guidance on FM Global projects along with technical training to Elevate contractors in an effort to widen understanding of FM Global requirements and ensure compliance with FM Global requirements.
Steve has two children and lives on Big Island Pond in Derry, NH with his wife. Steve is an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying fishing, boating, and skiing in his free time.
James (Jamie) Kelly
Jamie is the Director of Commercial Sales for Beacon Building Products representing Carlisle Syntec. Carlisle is an industry leader in TPO, PVC, EPDM and Green roofing systems. Jamie manages the commercial team at Beacon covering the Northeast Region. In addition to Jamie’s responsibilities, he is the technical point person for the region. Jamie has worked directly with
Carlisle and FM Global since 2014 to oversee compliance with FM Global.
Jamie is a graduate of Bryant University and has been in the roofing industry since 2012. He works with the Carlisle contractor base, architects, and roof consultants in the region. Jamie plans, develops, and implements Carlisle’s commercial strategies and works together to ensure success. Being the go-to person in the region for technical information, Jamie provides guidance on all aspects of FM Global. Jamie also provides FM training and assistance to the Carlisle contractor base to ensure compliance on FM projects.
Jamie lives in Wakefield with his wife and daughter. In his free time, he loves playing basketball and golf. Jamie is also a fan of the local Boston teams.
Darren Perry, PE, RRC
Darren Perry is Director of Technical Support for the SOPREMA USA Group. Darren manages the “inside” technical support team providing support and services for sales representative, design professionals and contractor customers. Darren manages the codes and approvals team to engage with “outside” laboratory testing and agency approvals aimed at enhancing SOPREMA products and private labeled products. Darren also provides management and technical oversight for the warranty department. Darren collaborates across all SOPREMA US brands, and the SOPREMA group abroad, to build stronger organizational networks.
Darren has 13 years of experience with the SOPREMA North American organization. Prior to his current responsibilities, Darren was Vice President of REI Engineers for 10 years and worked for FM Global for 12 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, is a licensed professional engineer, fire protection engineer, and a registered roof consultant.
Darren resides in Greenville, NC with his wife, Carol, and daughters Olivia and Elizabeth.
Theodore (Ted) Young
Ted Young joined GAF in 2007 as a Codes & Testing Specialist and has held various roles of increasing responsibility in both commercial and residential codes and commercial procurement (TPO and ISO), and currently leads the commercial codes & testing team across the TPO, ISO, coatings and mod bit product lines. Ted earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers University.
